Day 18: A Movie Featuring Your Favorite Actor

CAST AWAY (2000)

Compared to yesterday's selection, today's was much easier. Comedic actors usually have a better chance of transitioning to dramatic roles than the other way around. Tom Hanks, in my most honest and humble opinion, is one of the finest actors to ever grace the silver screen. He has the everyday man likes of Jimmy Stewart, the charm & wit of Cary Grant, and the comedic timing of Jack Lemmon.

Not too long ago Cast Away divided moviegoers where some were enthralled while others were bored stiff. I was a part of the former group. Most would agree, however, that Tom Hank's performance was outstanding. Personally, I believe he should have won the Oscar over Russell Crowe for Gladiator.

There aren't very many people who can pull off a convincing performance where their co-star is a volleyball. If his reaction to losing Wilson after his voyage back out on the sea to get home doesn't bring you to tears, then I question your membership status of the human race. And once getting back home, to lose the love of your life because she had to move on and accept that you were lost at sea (and most likely dead), is just truly heartbreaking. Fantastic movie with a brilliant note-worthy performance.

In the first installment of a new series I've decided to call "Painting with Shadows and Light", I'm going to share with you some of my favorite cinematographers. Commonly known as the Director's best friend, the Cinematographer -- also knows as the Director of Photography (or DP for short) -- plays one of the most crucial roles on the film crew. A cinematographer paints his celluloid landscape with shadows, light, and filters to fill the frame for the director. What he or she accomplishes "in camera" can make or break the overall look and feel of the final product that is eventually projected on a movie theater screen near you. When I first began my love affair with movies and filmmaking, one of the first names I started to recognize (outside of the big names, like Steven Spielberg) was a name associated with many of the films I grew up watching as a child throughout the 1980s. In 1958, Ian Fleming approached film producer Kevin McClory to help develop and produce the first James Bond motion picture. McClory didn't feel that any of Fleming's novels were very adaptable but knew that the James Bond character would translate well onto film. McClory, with the help of screenwriter Jack Whittingham, developed the new James Bond character through several treatments and screenplays resulting in Thunderball .
