Frailty

"Sometimes truth defies reason." Fenton is just your average young teenage boy living in a small town in Texas in 1979. He’s interested in girls, watches The Dukes of Hazzard , sneaks into R-rated movies at the local theater, and struggles to help his windowed father (Bill Paxton) raise his younger brother Adam. They’re as happy and complacent as three peas in a pod until one night dad wakes the two boys, claiming that he has been tasked by God to destroy demons here on earth. Frailty seamlessly blends a little bit of horror, a touch of thriller, some Southern Gothic, and religious fanaticism all into one movie practically creating its own genre. Told through Fenton’s (Matthew McConaughey) flashbacks as he confesses to the FBI Special Agent (Powers Boothe) that his brother, Adam is the notorious “God’s Hand” serial killer, who’s just claimed his fifth victim. Expertly directed by Bill Paxton; he helms the story with the tender care of a loving father. He explores del

Brewster’s Millions

“I'm gonna teach you to hate spending money. I'm gonna make you so sick of spending money that the mere sight of it will make you wanna throw up!” Baseball season is fully underway, and I just can’t get enough. So I offer up this little gem of a movie, Brewster’s Millions, to watch with the guys. It successfully combines the dreams-come-true elements of a sports film along with great wacky and hilarious comedic 1-2 combo punch of Richard Pryor and John Candy. Monty (Richard Pryor) is an aging minor league ball player for the Hackensack Bulls who is just one pitch away from losing his only job. He suddenly inherits $30 million from his recently deceased great-uncle Rupert. Seems like a great story, until we reach the fine print: Monty has to spend all $30 million in 30 days in order to receive his true inheritance – $300 million! If he fails, he receives nothing and is left as penniless as the day he started. Oh how my mind wandered when re-watching this film just the o

Sweet & Savory Pork Chops

For months now I've struggled to maintain a consistent weekly menu for having supper at home. And while Lisa and I don't have a heaping pile of responsibilities on the home front right now --  outside of keeping Amity in line  -- I'll be the first to admit that I do not manage my time well once arriving home after work. This past Sunday I created this week's menu consisting entirely of using the slow cooker. While the weather easily permits more slow cooker recipes, Lisa wasn't exactly jumping for joy about the possibility of eating every meal this week out of of a bowl. To be fair to her  (as well as myself) , I had to put in some variety, so every dish wasn't a soup or variation of a chili or stew. After another successfully executed African Chicken Peanut Stew on Sunday, Monday required a dish that strayed from the soup/stew pack. After altering a recipe I found online, and giving a better name than, "slow cooker pork chops," I introduce to you

When the beauty that is Autumn finally arrives, it brings with it fantastically bright colors of yellow, orange and red. It brings wonderfully chilly football weather, where sweaters, jackets and hats become a staple in my wardrobe until Spring of next year. Along with the arrival of the cool weather is the thought of warm soups, chili and stews. Meals that not only warm you up, but also stick to your ribs and keep you toasty. Last year while researching budget-conscience one-pot dishes, I discovered a new recipe that I want to share with you that instantly became a family favorite. It's called African Chicken Peanut Stew and it's a delicious blend of familiar flavors and mildly-exotic spices. This stew's main ingredients are sweet potatoes, chicken and peanuts. It's a hearty dish that is worthy of being placed at your table along the same ranks as the ever-faithful chili or broccoli cheese soup. AFRICAN CHICKEN PEANUT STEW Ingredients Needed: 2-3 lbs bonel
